The Journey Begins

As a kid, I hit a few trails. Mostly, they were in Mounds State Park (east of Anderson, Indiana), and they were for school... so I hated it.

It wasn't until 2002 that I discovered the joy of hiking on a trip that took me through Tennessee. Since that time, I have had many memorable hikes. Photographs adorn my home and office of the natural beauty of the world. These photographs come, in large part, from my day hikes.

Now, in my late 30's, however, I find myself seeking a new challenge in life, and in doing so, seeking it with the desire to challenge myself to grow deeper in both my personal perspectives on life, and in the confidence and trust that I place in God.

And thus, The Hiking Padre is born.

Over the next few years, I have given consideration to how I want to move forward with this aspect of my life, and I want to do so in a way that is faithful to the overall goal of life - to glorify God in all things, and to rely on him for guidance, redemption, and strength.

My day-hiking will continue, of course. With three children (ages 2, 4, and 6 later this month) it is going to be hard to try taking them all out for long-distance hikes... but I want to instill in them something that was missing in my life as a child - a genuine love and respect for the world around us in all its unspoiled beauty.

Here at The Hiking Padre, you will be able to follow my adventure. I plan to offer several features on this site:
  • Training Routines
  • Trip Reports
  • Gear Reviews
  • Spiritual Insights
It is my hope that they will help you in your hiking journey, whatever your faith may be; but, for those of you who are Christians, I hope to be able to walk alongside you in faith as well.

And who knows, perhaps in the not too distant future, I may even schedule some Hiking Padre group trips! Stay tuned. The adventure is just beginning.
